A sweet date night with gelato and cozy vibes! ❤️
Visited Hundred Acre Creamery's newest outlet at Sembawang Shopping Centre! The Winnie the Pooh theme adds such a cozy and nostalgic vibe—perfect for families, friends, and even a cute date night. Menu: 🍦 Truffle cheese waffles ($9) 🍦 Double scoop gelato ($8.50) 🍦 Vietnamese drip coffee ($4.50) 🍦 Iced white coffee ($7) We ordered their Vietnamese drip coffee with condensed milk (strong and sweet!) and white coffee with fresh milk (smooth and mellow). But the real star was the truffle cheese waffles—crispy, fluffy and cheesy, though the truffle taste was not as strong. We topped it off with two scoops of their handcrafted gelato: honey chrysanthemum which was quite refreshing, and roasted pistachio that is soooooo nutty and rich! Will be back again! During my exploration of Kumamoto, I came upon a mysterious little teahouse cafe with a peaceful vibe, hidden along the street. If you don't specifically look for it, you might miss its entrance to this wonderful place. I enjoyed the Tea and Sweet Set, which was priced at ¥605 a while back, though the price may have risen since then. The service was exceptional, and the recommendations were spot on. Feeling hot and sweaty, I asked for a cold tea, and they suggested the Chilled Sagara Tea, a local tea from Kumamoto prefecture. It was the best selection ever! Despite initial communication difficulties with the staff, everything went smoothly when the friendly young lady boss arrived and provided thorough explanations in perfect English. Their hospitality and patience were truly welcoming. I instantly fell in love with the Sagara Tea from its shade of green that captivated my soul at first sight. The natural, bright, intense, sweet, leafy, earthy aroma of the tea was rich, even when served cold. It's a high-quality tea with low astringency and bitterness. They also offer a wide range of teas, and if you're unsure what to choose, just let them recommend one. You won't regret coming here. The sweet I chose was Ikinari-dango, a local Kumamoto confectionery made by steaming sliced sweet potatoes wrapped in rice cake dough. Traditionally eaten in Kumamoto Prefecture as a snack during the sweet potato harvest season, it's a traditional sweet that spread among ordinary households. I visited Shikairou Chinese Restaurant in Nagasaki, eager to try their renowned Champon noodles. The total wait time was about 1.5 hours from joining the queue to the arrival of the food. The line snaked from the top restaurant level to the ground level, but it was worth the wait. Most people seemed drawn by their specialty noodles, either Champon or Saraudon, and the restaurant's amazing port view that adds to the dining experience. House Special Noodle Soup "CHANPON" (¥1320)🍜🥢 Champon has its origins in the Fujian dish "Tang Rou Si Noodles," which is a light soup primarily made with noodles, pork, shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and green onions. The first president of Shikairo is said to have enhanced this dish by creating a richer broth and adding more ingredients, along with unique, chewy noodles. This transformation gave rise to Champon, a Japanese-style adaptation that has since developed its own identity and become a favourite among the locals. The noodle is like a mix of ramen and Chinese noodles, thick, chewy, and yet slurpy. The broth is rich and savoury with the flavours of chicken and pork bones, cooked and simmered to bring out their essence. You can also taste the wok hei smokiness from the ingredients, cooked over high heat in the wok. The portion is generous, making it a tastisfying meal. Almond Jelly (¥660) For dessert, I tried the Almond Jelly. These vendors, often elderly ladies in traditional aprons and headscarves, would draw customers with the cheerful chime of the bell. Although the sound is no longer commonly heard, the carts still feature bells, preserving a nostalgic touch. Sold for around ¥300, Chirin Chirin Ice Cream is classified as a low-calorie kōri-gashi (frozen dessert). Each serving, including the cone, is approximately 70-80 kcal. Eating this noodle is straightforward: wait for the pot to boil, put the noodles in, and after 7 minutes, scoop them out and dip them into the agodashi soup or egg broth. The agodashi offers a refined, hearty, and elegant savoury flavour, while the egg broth delivers a creamy, rich texture. The noodles themselves are silky, slippery, and utterly tastisfying. I was quite interested in the Japanese version of Kakuni Manju (Pork Belly Buns) and wanted to see if there were any differences compared to the Braised Pork Belly Bun (Kong Bak Pau). So, I ventured to Nagasaki Chinatown for a taste test. At Iwasaki Honpo, the Kakuni Manju (¥600) stood out with its fatty braised pork belly that is soft, tender, and melts in your mouth. The savoury-sweet flavour complemented the light, fluffy steamed bun, making each bite tastisfying. The rich, meaty texture of the pork belly was great and had a rich melty layer of fats. Comparing this to the Kong Bak Pau, I noticed that while both buns feature delicious braised pork belly, there are subtle differences in flavour and texture.
